How to save energy in your house?

If you’re looking for ways to save energy, you’ll soon end up drowning in endless lists of tips that may or may not turn out to be effective. You might also find yourself phased by terms such as ‘standby consumption’, ‘energy scans’, ‘EPC scores’ and so on. We help you see the wood for the trees, to help you take big steps toward real energy savings.

WHY IS SAVING ENERGY SO IMPORTANT?

Energy costs an arm and a leg these days, but we simply cannot do without. We use it to cook our food, heat our homes, wash our clothes, and so many more things. As such, saving energy is a direct saving that will instantly make a difference to your wallet. And of course, the great ‘side effect’ is that by saving energy, you’re also making a positive contribution to the environment, let alone to your health. There are plenty of reasons to use energy smartly and sparingly, in other words.

QUICK WINS TO SAVE ENERGY AT HOME

So, what is the best way to save energy? Well, on a day to day basis, you can do so by making small changes around your home and to your daily activities. That includes things like energy efficient (LED) lighting, for example, doing the laundry at a lower temperature, cycling to work and reducing the length of time you spend in the shower. All of these little things quickly add up to make a structural difference to your energy consumption.

More radical ways to save energy

For those who’ve really got the taste for saving energy, there are more radical changes you can make to help you do so. These measures do require some initial investment, but once your energy consumption starts to drop, you’ll soon make back what you put in.

Outdoor blinds

Outdoor blinds, for example, can help you keep the heat out, meaning you don’t have to fall back on your power-hungry aircon system so quickly. If you want to save even more, solar-powered outdoor blinds are an option that shouldn’t be overlooked. These blinds run on free energy provided by the sun, which means you’re not even spending a penny on operating your solar shading system.

Night cooling

Night cooling vents are absolutely worth looking into as well. These vents allow you to safely bring in the cool night air to lower the temperature in your home using fresh air. This type of ventilation can easily cool your home down by a few degrees over the course of the night.

Solar panels

Why stop at using the free energy provided by the sun to control your outdoor blinds alone? With solar panels on your roof, other installations and appliances around your home can also be powered by the sun! Solar panels are a truly sustainable investment that will continue to pay off for decades to come.

Home battery storage

Capturing all that free energy provided by the sun is one thing, but making the best possible use of it is another thing altogether. A home battery can store energy when there’s plenty of sunshine to be had. That way, you can use your electrical appliances at whatever time suits you, without having to pay extra.

Heat pumps

Heating takes up the biggest share of the energy bills paid by any given household. With a heat pump, you get to use (geo)thermal energy from underground or the outside air to heat or cool rooms around the home. Two birds with one stone, in other words!

Insulation

Properly insulating a home can make a world of difference. Insulation allows you to keep the heat in during winter, and out as much as possible in summer. Either way, the result is lower energy bills and improved living comfort.

Smart home automation system

The ultimate way to save energy is by making sure all your sustainable technologies work together as a team. With a smart home automation system, you always have your hands on the levers, wherever you are, and whenever you want.

WHAT ARE SILENT ENERGY GUZZLERS?

A huge amount of energy is lost without anyone really noticing to ‘silent energy guzzlers’: devices that keep guzzling energy even in standby mode. Computers and their peripheral equipment are top of the list when it comes to standby consumption, but televisions (with digital set-top boxes), sound systems and even coffee makers and ovens (with a digital clock) keep using energy — and costing money — when not in use. As such, it’s better to switch these off completely whenever possible. If you want to detect standby consumption and see for yourself just how much power is going to waste, you can do so by installing a power meter between the appliance and the plug socket. This type of meter will tell you exactly how much energy an appliance continues to use when in standby.
