Transformation of an Abandoned Factory
In the past, there was the serene image of “singing fishermen at dusk, clad in raincoats.” Today, we witness the technological marvel of “technology-driven transformation of an abandoned factory.”
At the end of April 2023, Shaoxing’s first “near-zero carbon building” demonstration project, “Huahui · Zero Carbon Home,” was officially put into use. A “near-zero carbon building” is designed to minimize the building’s energy demand through passive design and significantly increase the efficiency of energy systems through active technologies, creating a comfortable indoor environment with minimal energy consumption.
Located in Yuecheng District, the birthplace of Lu Xun’s cultural heritage, the “Huahui · Zero Carbon Home” was originally a disused, weed-covered light industrial factory. Now, it has been transformed into an energy-efficient, comfortable, and “near-zero carbon” building. The project is set amidst scenic surroundings, close to modern commercial pedestrian streets and tourist economic zones.
The renovation aimed to reduce carbon emissions, focusing on creating a comfortable and zero-carbon building while validating the feasibility and reliability of the technologies used. The project integrated various “passive + active” technologies to address the industry’s challenge of achieving “high comfort” with “low energy consumption.”
Passive technologies applied include vacuum insulation panels for exterior walls, high-performance doors and windows, an external shading system, thermal bridge-free design, and airtight construction techniques.
Active energy-saving technologies include variable frequency ground-source and air-source systems, precise variable distribution, heat pumps with heat recovery, a six-constant comfort environment system, and an intelligent operation and maintenance system.
External Shading: Reducing Energy Consumption for Building Renovation
Achieving a comfortable, low-carbon, and energy-efficient building requires the addition of appropriate external shading systems, a critical component.
The “Huahui · Zero Carbon Home” had six key requirements for its shading system:
Adjustability: The shading system needed to be adjustable and movable.
Performance: SD ≤ 0.25.
Aesthetic Harmony: The shading system should harmonize with local culture and the environment while maintaining a modern technological aesthetic.
Integration: The shading system should not protrude from the façade and must be fully concealed.
Durability: The system should have a lifespan of at least 20 years.
Functionality: The system should balance transparency with privacy protection.
Given the project’s high shading requirements, small scale, varied window types (including curtain walls), and other constraints, Jinxingyu Shading customized an external shading solution, selecting aluminum Venetian blinds and fabric roller blinds for different building facades.
To address the issue of west-facing sunlight, the project’s west facade was equipped with high-reflectivity silver JB-CC-80S aluminum Venetian blinds. These blinds offer over 90% shading and insulation efficiency, with slats that can be flexibly adjusted between 0-90 degrees, allowing for precise control over indoor light levels. This reduces both air conditioning and lighting energy consumption while minimizing glare, creating a comfortable visual experience inside.
The facades facing the river and pedestrian street were outfitted with JZ-M-110S fabric roller blinds. These blinds feature a slim, minimalist design, offering high aesthetic value while effectively reducing direct sunlight, preventing glare, and providing ventilation and mosquito prevention. The blinds use imported beige fabric from France with a 4% openness factor, allowing for shade while maintaining a view of the bustling pedestrian street, thus creating a comfortable office environment.
Currently, the “Huahui · Zero Carbon Home” is in use and has demonstrated excellent operational performance and comfort levels. The aluminum Venetian blinds and fabric roller blinds have significantly improved indoor light and thermal comfort, reducing air conditioning and lighting costs, and making the building more “green, low-carbon, and energy-efficient.”
Aluminum Venetian Blinds
ULE PANDA’s outdoor Venetian blinds can precisely manage sunlight throughout the day, blocking heat while accurately directing light indoors. Whether you want to let bright light flood the space, creating a sunlit atmosphere, or adjust the slats to prevent glare for a pleasant working environment, or close the blinds for a darker setting to enhance relaxation and privacy, these blinds offer the flexibility to create the desired indoor ambiance.
